The new councillor for Tyn-y-Nant has revealed her priorities as Labour held on to the Rhondda Cynon Taf Council seat.

Julie Barton was elected as the new councillor for the area following a by-election held on Thursday, July 22.

She gained 411 votes while Rob Green of the Conservatives got 62 and Ioan Bellin of Plaid Cymru got 35.

The by-election was held following the death of Councillor Clayton Willis who had served as councillor for the area since RCT Council came into existence in 1995/1996.

Responding to the win, Councillor Barton said: “It is an absolute privilege and I am delighted that the residents of Tynant have elected me to represent them on RCT County Borough Council.

“I cannot wait to get started in the role and I’m really looking forward to representing our village in the council chamber by raising the issues that matter to them and lobbying for investment.

“One of the first priorities that I want to address will be to introduce traffic calming measures on Parish Road. A number of residents in the area expressed concerns at the speed of traffic along the main road, which of course is a real danger to pedestrians and road users.

“I also want to set up regular meetings with South Wales Police and other interested groups to raise issues of anti-social behaviour brought to my attention.

“I will also be carrying on with my work in the community through the amazing local groups we have in the village – Litter Free Beddau and Tynant, Friends of Tynant Woods and the Beddau and Tynant Community Library.

“I will work to the best of my abilities to reward the trust placed in me by the people of our community and to work to improve our village for everyone.”
