A jealous man with a history of domestic violence assaulted his partner twice in three days.

Stewart Peel attacked her on the first occasion when he saw her wearing a “man’s” jacket, and on the second after being told he couldn’t go with her and a female friend on a trip to Swindon.

Sending him to prison, a judge told the 58-year-old former supermarket delivery driver he was immature and insecure – and he said in the experience of the courts “men who assault woman are inadequate cowards”.

Swansea Crown Court heard that Peel and his most recent victim had known each other for a number of years but had only been in a relationship for a matter of weeks when he attacked her in July this year.

Craig Jones, prosecuting, said the first assault took place at the defendant’s home in Swansea on July 6 when a “very jealous” Peel began quizzing the woman about the “man’s style coat” she was wearing. The court heard the defendant became aggressive and abusive, grabbing the woman by the writs and preventing her from leaving the property. He then began to punch her to the face, with the victim putting up her arms up in an attempt parry the blows. The court heard the woman suffered bruising to arms, and an injury to her eye brow.

The second assault occurred two days later after the pair had been to a pub on the city’s High Street before taking a taxi back to Peel’s home. Mr Jones said there were a series of “angry arguments” throughout the evening which culminated in violence when the defendant was told he could not accompany his partner and her female friend on a planned trip to Swindon. The court heard Peel punched his girlfriend on the nose a number of times, and snatched her phone so she could not call for help – as she made for the door he then pushed her into the wall, causing her to bang her head and fall to the floor. Mr Jones said the next thing the victim recalled was coming around on the ground to find Peel on top of her, and his hands around her neck.

Police officers arrived shortly afterwards, and Peel was arrested. The court heard the victim suffered bruises and lumps to her arms, face, and head, and had “soreness throughout her body”.

Stewart Douglas Peel, of Clyne Close, Mayals, Swansea, had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. He has a long history of offending stretching back more than 30 years with numerous offences of violence on his record including attacks on partners and former partners – the assaults on women have seen him pushing, slapping, punching, headbutting, kicking, and dragging by the hair.

Judge Paul Thomas QC told Peel it was clear he was an “insecure and immature” man with a fragile sense of masculinity. He said it was the experience of the courts that people like the defendant who assault women “are inadequate cowards”.

Giving the defendant a 25 per cent discount for his guilty pleas the judge sentenced him to two years and eight months in prison comprising eight months for the first assault and two years for the second. Peel will serve up to half that period in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community.
